Tri Martolod
Tri Martolod is a well-known, fairly old song from Bretagne, and the reason why I love music from that part of France! It is energetic and exciting. My first string quartet.

My Sorrow and My Trouble
After finishing this arrangement, I scrolled through the manuscripts I downloaded from IMSLP, trying to find the document of origin. I'm still working on that. I'm almost positive it's a Scottish tune from the 1700s.

About 2/3 through, I decide it is too short and add a whole section of my own creation.
I like it.
Let me know what you think.

Chanson Roland

I found this piece in an old book called Popular Music of the Olden Times, 1965. The screenshot, above, was taken from a book called Specimens of Various Styles of Music, published in the early 1800s. The Chanson Roland in it's original poetry is famous for being the first known work of French literature, from the 1200s and memorializing the 1066 Norman conquest. The claim in the 1800 book is that it was originally sung to this music, but this is doubted by the authors of the 1965 collection. However, it's a beautiful tune. I did nothing to it but distribute the parts from to violin, viola and cello.

How Can I Keep From Singing?
A favorite hymn, and one of the first arrangements I did that made me think hmmm...this is not only fun, it seems to be really good! For three violins. Message me if you'd like a different configuration of instruments.

John Riley

John Riley, a ballad based on Homer's Odyssey, voyaged from England to America in the 1800s.
Fair young maid all in her garden
Strange young man came riding by
Saying fair young maid, will you marry me
This then, sir, was her reply
Oh no, kind sir, I cannot marry thee
For I've a love who sails the deep salt sea
Though he's been gone these seven years
Still no man shall marry me

Deep Blue Sea
A truly sad song, but gorgeous. I used to sing it at camp as a child, and strangely enough, it never bothered or frightened me. Go figure.
